What Is amfori BSCI?

BSCI stands for Business Social Compliance Initiative. It is a social compliance programme used by brands, retailers, and importers to assess working conditions in their supply chains. The programme was launched by the Foreign Trade Association in 2003. The association later rebranded as amfori, and the programme is now commonly known as amfori BSCI.

amfori BSCI helps buyers review how suppliers manage labour rights, working hours, fair remuneration, child labour prevention, bonded labour prevention, occupational health and safety, ethical business practices, and environmental practices. An amfori BSCI audit is not related to product quality, food safety, product safety, or ISO certification. It focuses on social compliance and responsible business conduct at the production site. Auditors review documents, observe the site, and interview workers to understand what is actually happening inside the factory.

Is BSCI a Certificate or an Audit Report?

When a buyer asks for a "BSCI certificate", they usually mean a valid amfori BSCI audit report with an acceptable rating. The report is uploaded to the amfori Sustainability Platform and can be reviewed by eligible amfori members and audited suppliers.

This distinction matters. A valid BSCI result can only come through the official amfori audit process and an approved monitoring partner. A consultancy cannot issue a BSCI certificate by itself. If any provider in Pakistan claims to issue a BSCI certificate directly, you should treat that claim carefully and ask whether the audit will be uploaded to the official amfori platform.

How amfori BSCI Audits Are Assessed

An amfori BSCI audit uses audit questions across the 13 performance areas. Evidence is gathered through document review, site observation, management interviews, and confidential worker interviews. Each question is normally rated as Yes, No, Partial, or Not Applicable. The final audit report then produces an overall rating from A to E.

This is why preparation should not be limited to documents. A factory may have policies in place but still fail if payroll records, working hours, worker interviews, fire safety controls, legal registrations, or site conditions do not support those policies.

• Producer or site profile: The factory site is mapped on the amfori Sustainability Platform with the required business, address, workforce, and production details.

• Self-assessment or risk questionnaire: Your factory may need to complete platform questionnaires or risk assessment information before the audit. This helps identify early gaps.
• Audit announcement type: amfori BSCI audits are now normally semi-announced or fully unannounced. Since September 2024, fully announced amfori BSCI audits are no longer accepted under the normal process.
• On-site audit: The auditor visits the factory, conducts an opening meeting, reviews documents, checks the site, interviews workers privately, and closes the audit with key findings.
• Audit report and rating: The audit company uploads the report and rating to the amfori platform. The buyer can then review the result.
